Abdullah Athayi

Co-founder and Head of Research & Knowledge Transfer

a Ph.D. candidate at the Institute of Asian and African Studies of Berlin’s Humboldt University, Mr. Athayi’s research, and study focuses are on Afghan diaspora, civic participation, integration, and transnational engagement. Abdullah Athayi holds a master’s degree in Law and a bachelor’s in Law and Political Science, both from Kabul University.

Mr.  Athayi started his civil society activities in Afghanistan along with transition politics and international intervention in 2001. As an advocate for human and women’s rights, the rule of law, and democracy, he actively participated in the post- 2001 vibrant civil society of Afghanistan through research, advocacy, and support to civil society. Before his relocation to Berlin, he worked as a program manager at the Heinrich Boell Foundation (HBS) office in Kabul, where he promoted democracy, peace, and security. Previously, he has worked as Legal Manager at Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) for the 2010 Parliamentary Elections and as Deputy Director for Human Rights and Eradication of Violence Organization. Mr. Athayi has published various research papers and articles in national and international journals and newspapers. He is fluent in Dari, English, Persian, and German.
